Kapinzal's Operating State 

Kapinzal Social Foundation was formerly known as Kapinzal Club, which was formed in the year 1998 in South District of Sikkim and after gaining a couple of years of up and downs experiences in development field, it had been registered formally in the year 2000 under Societies Registration Act 1860. With an enormous motive to work for millennium development goal, during the year 2013 – 14 the Governing body with its all the members of General body has decided to change its name formally as Kapinzal Social Foundation. The foundation is dedicated to develop an optimal mechanism for rural society, mainly the disadvantaged sections. It has been founded and managed by a team of young professionals with commitment to improve the quality of life by sustainable development with socioeconomic changes. It aims to achieve the goal through effective implementation of the rural development programs utilizing the local resources with people centric approach.

Kapinzal Social Foundation is a facilitator platform developed by young educated spirits of Sikkim playing a decisive role in mainstream social issues across the state. It is able to achieve the milestones with the help of devoted and expert team. By casting local communities with its team, its efforts are now successful and reflected in the visible positive changes.The NGO plays role of a catalyst in institutional development, which strategies are focused and well planned to achieve the desired objectives. Implementation process has been executed through a series of meeting and awareness campaigns etc. involving the target community to render better results. Now the team is in process to discover new horizons to achieve our ultimate goal that is to bring the deprived classes in the mainstream by improving the socio – economic condition of rural community basically. It strives for innovative solutions to combat social issues. The problems faced by rural unprivileged classes are the inspiration of its endeavor.

Governance cum Management

There is an Executive Committee comprising nine members with exceptional key developmental quality background specifically in promotion and development of backward / disadvantage society. The Committee with 1/3^rd of female members used to finalizes by the General body of the organization for a period of three years. Other than the Executive Committee, there is a team with enthusiastic quality, educated and qualified, spirited as development practitioners looking after the managerial cum administrative section professionally as well as another group of full timers working with zeal in general, who are taking care of and carrying out all the works with participatory action in field systematically as transparently. Kapinzal Social Foundation is more accountable with its system and vision somehow. All its activities are maintaining professionally as distinctly as transparently through proper Management Information System and advance book keeping and accounting method.

Objectives

Kapinzal Social Foundation works for the cause and care of deprived rural societies and improve their quality of life professionally. It is integrating its programs and services, and consciously moving from welfare towards development and long term sustainability for rural communities as because the community's active involvement and support in rural development action makes the program sustainable as well as the platform by which they are availing facilitation.

Its objectives involve

To improve the socioeconomic condition of the small and marginalized section of the community particularly poorest of the poor, youth and women through various integrated rural development initiatives and innovations.

To develop and implement poverty focus participatory approach in agriculture & allied, livestock, watershed development, community mobilization and build them professionally, which is sustainable and can be re-applicable to other areas of its interest.

To establish village base institutions such as society, saving and thrift credit group, SHGs etc for strengthening the process of participatory development.

To setup knowledge center for the rural peoples in the areas of agriculture/allied and watershed development also other aspects of natural resource base livelihoods.

To promote organic production and their marketing in the area of agriculture.

To build up the capacity of community for self-reliant so that they can be able to identify their problems and self develop the solution through team spirit.

Mr. Rai was a founder member of the Organization and played role as President for the foundation for a couple of years. Later he had become as lifetime Advisor of the organization. PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE                                                                                                                                                                        

Assistant Manager and Deputy Manager, Marketing, in the Sikkim State Cooperative Marketing Federation (SIMFED) as from 1984 to 1986.

Appeared successfully in the State Civil Service examination and appointed as Under Secretary in Government of Sikkim in 1986. Deputed to SIMFED. Resigned from government service in 1987.

Established Metalex Industries (P) Ltd, a manufacturing unit, in 1988. Unit could not sustain and was closed down in 1992.

Established Yuksom Tours and Treks in 1991 as a sole proprietary concern. The travel company is continuing to date.

As founder member established Green Circle, an environmental group, in 1994. 

As founder member established Sikkim Development Foundation (SF), a Non-Governmental Organization in 1999.

Appointed as Project Director, “Project for Employment and Income Generation through Village Tourism  and Micro Enterprise Initiatives” implemented by SF between July 2001 to March 2003.

Executive Director in Sikkim Development Foundation since March 2003.

In December 2007 appointed as Short Term Consultant (STC) by WSP-SA for Sikkim Water Quality Project. Contract renewed in 2008 upto July 2009.

In February 2009 appointed as Chairperson of Ecotourism and Village Tourism division of the Travel Agents Association of Sikkim.

WORK EXPERIENCE                                                                                                                                                                                       

As Assistant Manager & Deputy Manager in SIMFED was involved in marketing of agricultural produce of Sikkim. This entailed procurement from village level and sales outside the state.

As Director in Metalex Industries (P) Ltd, headed the production and administration of the company.

As promoter and proprietor of Yuksom Tours and Treks, established one of the first travel companies in Sikkim. Has been actively involved in the promotion of responsible tourism in the state in a personal capacity as well as General Secretary and later as Executive Member of the Travel Agents Association of Sikkim (TAAS).

As a founder member of Green Circle, established one of the first environmental groups in Sikkim. Green Circle was involved in awareness generation and advocacy of issues related to the natural and cultural heritage of Sikkim.

As founder member of Sikkim Development Foundation have been engaged as Project Director and as Executive Director. Sikkim Development Foundation has been in the forefront of the NGO movement in Sikkim in the last few years, addressing livelihood issues. The focus has been on engagement with rural and semi urban communities to identify and support community based initiatives which are based on local resources and are sustainable.

As Project Coordinator in the “Arithang Demonstration Project” of the Ausaid supported “Gangtok Water Supply & Sanitation Project” 2002 – 2004 led a team which worked on community mobilization and organisation, KAP study and baseline survey, reporting & documentation, capacity building programmes in the project area.

As STC contracted by WSP-SA for 2007 – 08 in Sikkim Water Quality Project, was responsible for policy advocacy with Rural Management and Development Department (RM&DD, Government of Sikkim. This included analysis of RM&DD implementation mechanisms (staff structure and fund flows), facilitating state and district level discussions and activity mapping workshops and community engagements as Project Coordinator for Evaluation of Total Sanitation Campaign (TSC), commissioned by RM&DD, Government of Sikkim and carried out by Sikkim Development Foundation in July – August 2009, headed the team to conceptualize the methodology for evaluation, put together the team and coordinate the field survey, collation and analysis of data, preparation of the evaluation report and presentation of the report to RM&DD.

Attended the 3^rd South Asia Conference on Sanitation (SACOSAN), New Delhi, in November 2008, as the sole NGO representative from Sikkim.

As STC for WSP-SA during 2008 – 09 was involved in identifying 8 pilot areas for implementation of Water Safety Planning, facilitating training workshops for GP level functionaries, preparation of VVWSC guidelines and working closely with RM&DD to formulate a state rural drinking water policy in line with the National Rural Drinking Water Programme (NRDWP). This is currently in process.

As Chairperson of the Ecotourism and Village Tourism Committee, conducted discussions with Village Tourism Bodies on formulating policy for development of Ecotourism and Village Tourism in Sikkim which is to be presented to the Government of Sikkim. Evaluation of Ecotourism and Village Tourism is currently in progress.

As a local Sikkimese, has, over 25 years, been closely associated with various social formal and non formal local organizations interacting with the state government in various sectors. This has provided a deep understanding of the issues related to governmental as well as non governmental interventions in the developmental sector of the state.

As a local landowning Sikkimese ancestrally from a rural background, have been able to relate to issues concerning rural communities and have a natural bonding with rural people. 

                                                                                                                                                                                                                       

Information Relting to Volunteering Opportunities

When and how do I pay the program fees ?

You have to pay the program fee on the day of your arrival to the Account section of Kapinzal Social Foundation in US $ (or the equivalent in GB Pounds, Euros or Indian Rupees) cash.

Cancellations and Refund Policy

The process of allocating you to a specific volunteer program starts as soon as we receive your application. So you are requested to think twice before you put down your preference of a volunteer program.

However, you can postpone or cancel your placement in a program in accordance with the following terms and conditions:

• You will be placed in an alternative project in the case when the Foundation cannot place you on the project you applied for.
• In the failure of placing you in any alternative project, which is very rare, you will get a total refund of your registration fee. Here it should be noted that Kapinzal Social Foundation is a non-profit organization working at grassroots level and cannot take any liability for any costs incurred or inconvenience caused due to the cancellation of a project.
• An amount of US $10 towards administration costs will be retained from your registration fee and the balance will be refunded to you in the case the application is cancelled before your placement in a project is finalized.
• No amount will be refunded if you reject to participate in a project you have applied for. However the following two conditions are treated as exemptions.

1. When you have to cancel your placement in the case of any unfortunate situation like death or serious illness of immediate relative.
2. When you have to cancel your placement in the case of any unforeseen incidents that would prevent you from being able to participate in the program.

In any of the above two cases, you will receive a refund of 70% of the registration fee after excluding US $10 towards administration costs. However, the decision will be made at the discretion of Kapinzal Social Foundation and you are required to produce sufficient and reliable documentary evidence to support your cause.

However, regardless of your cancellation/non-acceptance, you would continue as a registered member of the Foundation for a period of 12 months from the date of joining and you would continue to receive newsletters and information timely.

Our Activities

Kapinzal Social Foundation started its activities with agriculture, water, natural resources, etc. It’s focus has been on the development of poor and marginalized people, youth, women, adolescents and children. Its activities have diversified in the fields of women’s literacy, formal school education, non-formal education, rural employment, income generating skills, SHG formation, farmers club and development, community health and awareness programs on various social issues. The NGO is working in rural as well as urban areas of Sikkim. It is being carrying out the activities availing participation from the community always as well as best wishes and guidance for making it more prominent facilitator on behalf of the poorest society. Thus it becomes more familiar to the peoples. We the team of the affairs is trying to make it more distinct, transparent and systematic, so that the people may participate with their hope of development and faith on it.

Community Health Program

Community health program includes making the community aware of health and essentially aims at improving personal and family health conditions by bringing about a change in behavioural habits. The focus is given on improving the health status of women and children through different need-based interventions. Emphasis is given on health promotion, preventive health care measures, health education and awareness generation; strengthening linkages and referrals with existing government health services. Attempt is also made to consolidate the indigenous knowledge and good practices of the traditional healers regarding health, to ensure the availability of better health services in remote areas. The strategy used to implement a Community health program involves knowing the health needs of the people, planning with them about what could be done to make them healthy, communicating with them through SHGs, and Youth groups about the proposed behavior changes, creating linkages with the concerned local persons and institutions including government and private health service providers, developing a peer group for promoting healthy environment in the village which will help in maintaining the success of the program. Knowledge inputs are given to community people, which are then transferred to the community to some extent. This helps to improve the health status of the community and in turn improve the quality of life. The activities of the program include promotion of best health practices regarding safe drinking water, clean kitchen package, water resource management, and waste water disposal management, improved nutrition through kitchen garden and hygiene and sanitation.

Environment 

Kapinzal Social Foundation guides other organizations also to take the initiative jointly for making a greenery and Eco-friendly environment in their locality also. It has designed a system of work in this sector long run by doing practical intervention in association with those organizations working as key facilitator for the society, which have been promoted by the organization after its activation and some of them were promoted by themselves before. Women Empowerment 

Kapinzal Social Foundation started working for women through promotion of resource base income generating activities and forming SHGs and nurturing them with professional inputs for their sustainability. The organization trained a number of women workers for looking after women activities and organizing them long run in a sustainable manner. The uniqueness of the Foundation is that the entire women program is managed by women, at all levels. Due to this characteristic, women are able to freely express, plan and execute activities by themselves. It organizes the program uniformly in all the villages of all its targeted areas, which approach is making program effective, viable and sustainable. Though women have joined the program at different time, majority of them remain in the program for many years, developing themselves gradually, year after year. Empowering women program aims at empowering the rural poor, illiterate and marginalized women, in social, economic, intellectual, psychological, moral and ethical spheres of life. To bring about lasting and sustainable change among the disadvantaged women, who are socially and economically backward, it involves a step process. The organization understands that the best way to lead these women forward is to assist them in building their capacities and enabling them to think for them, plan and implement their own development. This is done through motivation and training sessions. Kapinzal Social Foundation also empowers the partner institutions that joint hands to reach out to a greater number of women in disadvantage situations. It lays emphasis on women’s participation in all the programs and activities.

Child Labour & Development

This is another important objective of the Foundation is to perform activities for development and welfare of children. It has been performing its faithful service for children welfare. Awareness is being continued that engaging Child as labour is a crime, to aware the society at large in this important factor our organization did remarkable works, our staff visited many institutions/industries to search whether any person appointing child as labour? Our organization has been able to rescue some children from such kind of cruel owners, it has already performed a lot of activities relating to destitute child labour, education etc. and provided educational help to poor children and re admitted the rescued children in school also gathered all such children who are roistering in the street and also admitted them in school and provided them the real platform of happiness with the education and help of which everybody can enrich their life.

HIV/AIDS

India is a country of vast dimensions. The formidable challenge is the enormity of the problem, both in number of trafficked persons and increasing number of locations.  Of late, there is an expanding market for commercial sexual exploitation through non-brothel based modalities where the trafficked persons are made to pose as attendants, masseurs and as bartenders. Child pornography and cyber sex are other areas that requires concerted attention. Sex tourism, especially child sex tourism, is also a growing phenomenon and India is emerging as a major tourist destination. In practice, however, human beings may be and are trafficked from one poor area to another poor area as well for reasons best known to the traffickers. The fact is that the process of trafficking is designed and manipulated by traffickers for their own ends for which they employ all kinds of means. Therefore the assumption that human beings are always trafficked from undeveloped to more developed places is untenable. The problem of poverty has become acute in the region and the problems of human trafficking has arisen along with other crimes like theft, robbery, alcoholism, drug abuse etc. finding no opportunity for income generation, many young people whether literate, opt for going out of the state for looking for some avenues. But the ignorant and illiterate girls and women fall prey to the hands of some middle men/agents who exploit them through a systematic channel of network. These middle men/agents pretend to be the agents of some companies and assure them to give jobs through the companies. But after taking them to outside from their place, the young girls are used as commercial sex workers.

Many incidents of trafficking of young girls and women from remote parts of state to different places, such as small towns or cities of the state has come to the limelight. They get trapped by being in the nexus and become victims. Sikkim is the state which is also affecting by HIV / AIDS gradually. The organization observed that the illegal and unprotected sex is increasing, which causes welcoming the dreaded virus to the rural and illiterate community by themselves speedily. With this view, the Foundation as facilitator initiating many programs relating to this sectors to aware the people belong to remote areas of the state, where still the people are far away from the information and knowledge about the condition happening around and this dreaded virus attacking them slowly. This is our prime responsibility to aware and makes the people more knowledgeable and informatic first, where we belong to and started our first step from here itself.

Empowering Youth

Involvement and participation of all sections of people is very important to ensure sustainable development of the rural community. Youth are a great human asset in any community. They not only have great potential but also high level of commitment towards a cause. The objective of youth participation in the community is for acceleration of growth and development. Kapinzal social Foundation is working at creating effective leadership among rural youth and is transforming them into agents of change in their communities, in areas of the environment, health, sanitation and education. Majority of the rural youth are school dropouts and about 80% of them are unemployed. One of the objectives of the program is to develop the personality of the youth and empower them in gaining self-confidence and self-respect. The other objective is to train the youth to become integral part of the main stream and involve them in the community development process. The program also aims at improving the hidden skills and assisting them in developing themselves in the various aspects of life. The organization makes efforts to provide opportunities by which the youth can develop themselves, their families and also their communities.

VOLUNTEER

We at Kapinzal Social Foundation, provide you with the opportunity to participate in projects dealing with health, community development, child education, disadvantaged residents and many more. We aim to improve the living conditions of the locals in India basically in the State of Sikkim and need your support for doing so. These projects will not only help the less fortunate but also help you as a volunteer to know another culture, may be another language and make new friends for life. INTERNSHIP VOLUNTEER

Intern is one who works in a temporary position with an emphasis on on-the-job training rather than merely employment. You could be a student or about to start a new career for yourself. As an Intern in Kapinzal Social Foundation you will be unpaid as we lack resources to support you, but on the other hand we will support you completely and make sure that your experience with us makes you a thorough professional in your work life. The skills required for the assignment provided to you would be provided. The time for the Internship could be 6 – 12 weeks, but can be shorter or longer.

These are the kinds of Internship that we offer: Work experience Internship: Most often this will be in the second or third year of the school or College period. The placement can be from 2 months to sometimes even one full year (it's your wish). During this period the intern is supposed to use the things he has learned in College or school and put it in practice. This way the Interns gets work experience in their field of study. The gained experience will be helpful to finish up the last year of the study.

Research Internship (graduation) or dissertation Internship: This is mostly done by students that are in their last year. With this kind of Internship a student does research for the Foundation or one of our subsidiary organizations. There are many areas where we need inputs after intense research. You can help us with that through these efforts.

Another kind of Internship will be those students interested in taking a year off after completing their undergraduate degree to give them an opportunity to travel or do some kind of volunteer work or Internship. They may not feel quite ready to settle down in a job or make decisions based on establishing a career or settling down in a new location. The focus areas of Internship could be in health care, women's issues, and education of children, culture, child development, sustainable development, and income generation. However, Volunteering India can craft an Internship projects in nearly any area you wish.

Support for your Internship with us. You would need support for travel, stay and our fee. Academic credit is a possibility for many Internships. However, the Internship will need to be approved for credit by your college and you may need a faculty sponsor. The Internship sponsor must also agree to supervise and evaluate the Internship experience. In many, cases there are school deadlines for applying for credit, so check soon with the appropriate department at your institution. We will provide you full details as to what is expected of you before the start of the Internship. We will discuss the details and the logistics with the Internship sponsor before you start, so the Internship will be a positive experience for both you and Kapinzal Social Foundation.
